1999. The NDP won 39 seats and held majority governing status in
the 1996 elections, a loss of 12 seats.

Leader of the British Columbia New Democratic Party, February 1996.
Elected over four opponents on the first ballot with 802 votes (71%).
MISCELLANEOUS:
Clark abruptly resigned as British Columbia Premier in August 1999 after
becoming the target of an RCMP investigation related to criminal corruption
charges for purportedly accepting approxmately $10,000 in unreported
home improvement favours from a casino permit applicant. He was acquitted
in 2002. The Court found Clark violated the Province's Conflict of Interest
law, but did not violate any criminal laws.
